Good info Bill. Can you tell from the paint itself how the orange paint was applied? (dipped with runs, sprayed, etc?) Can you see any other colors besides orange? I've also seen white and blue on original 65 spindles.

Hi Tony . It looks like it was held by the threaded end and dipped . I had always heard the amount of coverage depended on how full the bucket was . No sign of any other colors but I have only cleaned one side so far .

Both of my mine show orange paint. One is a 396 car the other is a small block car.

BUT... On an unrestored Duntov/Bowtie 396 coupe that I took pictures of at the 2008 NCRS National Convention when I was researching unrestored 396 cars for the 396 that I just completed, the car had green paint on the left spindle but no signs of any color paint on the right spindle. See the attached pictures of the car below.

One other interesting thing I found on my 396 drive shaft yoke was the same orange paint?!?! I have a picture of it somewhere and reproduced the paint markings when I restored the drive shaft.

            Regards,

            James West

I can tell you the orange was applied prior to machining. Study original parts and you will see the evidence.

Bill,The car was VIN 1764X. I also went back through some of my pictures of the car and found that there was blue paint on the top of the right spindle. See the attached picture.

I hate to keep posting this photo but it does show a lot. When zoomed I don't see any evidenced orange paint on the front spindle. So with James photo and this one you might conclude not all cars had it.
