    58 hood pull

Hi, I have the repro 5 year old approx. V groove hood pull. Seems the cable sheathing is sliding in and out of the metal housing at the handle, very stiff and does not allow the cables to fully depress the bolt latch. How are these fixed inside the metal jacket and how can I fix this. Is it a throw away now? Also cable never did slide through sheathing well with no kinks. What is the best lube to squirt into sheathing when reassembling. Thanks, Brad.

    Re: 58 hood pull

I bought a repro several years ago and just installed it this summer. The cable is very stiff and doesn't release like the originals did. I used some "pre lube" that I bought many years ago from Quanta. It slides much better now by it still won't return by it self, I have to push it back in. It was better than what was in the car when I bought it.

You need to disassemble the retainer (it unscrews) and tighten the loop with a needle nose pliers where the cable goes through the handle lever pull hole. It seems the reproduction cables skip this key step in manufacture causing them to rub and feel stiff. I have taken a few apart and that's the ticket along with some grease in there. Good luck, Dan

Sorry I don't have any pictures of that, but once you get it apart, you will be able to see the problem and fix it as I have described.

            Dan,
Are you talking about the part that has the cable sleeves crimped?

Hi Dan, Brad again, did my last message come through? Is the part that unscrew's the cap piece that rest's against the brake and hood latch bracket? and does the stainless cap or cover have to be carefuuly taken off before you can unscrew the stop piece? Thank's.

YES, that is the part . The SS piece does NOT have to come off (don't mess with it), some will unscrew pretty easy and others are a bit tougher, but it will come apart. Once apart, you will be able to tighten the crimp on the U bend where it goes through the lever and it will operate much smoother without all that friction. Don't forget to put some grease in there before you put it back. Operation should be night and day for you. Cheers!

I just took one apart following Bob Baird instruction is his restoration guide. I don't understand what Dan did, but I can assume you that if you don't carefully pry the stainless trim off you can access the cable and plastic guide that keeps the handle it from turning. This was supposedly a broken unit so I'm trying to repair it. Once apart the handle that has the stud and clip inside was broken. I'll try and drill and tap it and re assemble it.
