'61 Differential Click Noise

I recently noticed a click sound from the rear occasionally when doing a quick take off in first gear with my 4:11 posi. The sound would be similar to having a large nut loose in the truck that rolls and hits the side of the trunk on take off. Rebuilt rear end has about 6000 miles on it.

I jacked the rear wheels off the ground and turned the driveshaft back and forth. As I turned it back and forth, I could hear a click coming from the diff carrier. Is this normal or do I have to much play or something else going on? Gary or other diff guys please chime in. Thanks

I'm no expert, but I do know that noise is not normal. I'd be pulling the rear end ASAP. You might be able to isolate the noise by pulling one axle out and turning rear end to see if that eliminates the noise, if not do the same with other axle.

Larry...........I don't work on those units, just the 63-79 vette diffs. Tom Parsons will be the guy who knows them the best. What I can say is those posi cases were not the strongest and you should not be getting a clunk out of it. With 6k miles on it I would be removing it to check it close at the posi & pinion. There should be some backlash in the pinion but check to see if there is in/out movement at the pinion, there shouldn't be any. Lash should be around 008".
