What are the tricks to install a lead acid battery in a 1959 and not have an acid spill?

    Jimmy -

Wrap the battery in two or three plastic grocery bags to contain any dribbles while you tilt it to install it, then remove the bags.

      Jimmy,
In the past before "sealed batterys", I would cut six 2" X 2" squares of thin plastic "Visqueen" & reinstall the caps snugly with a square of plastic under each cap to seal the acid in. You can also use John's advise for double protection. Don't forget to remove plastic seals when the battery is in. Barry Holmes

...or at a minimum before the engine goes back in.

Kidding aside. Jimmy, What type and manufacturer is your battery?

If you're replacing with a Interstate or NAPA or new AC Delco, use the removable handle to assist in getting it tucked in. Yes wrap it in a bag, but most batts today have sealed caps. You MUST tilt it to get in position. Just make sure you're putting it in there with the correct orientation so you don't have to do it twice! Now who would EVER do a thing like that! Guess Who?
