    1960 Radiator Core Support

I'm refurbishing the radiator core support in my 1960 and it has a 5/16 hole drilled in the top of the upper crossbar, about 3/4 inch off-center (towards the driver's side) as shown in the attached photos. I haven't see any pictures of a hole like this in other core supports. Nothing was mounted through this hole and no brackets, accessories or wiring are nearby. Should I just weld the hole closed and grind the weld smooth?

Does anyone have an idea about why such a hole would be drilled in this location? Appreciate any input,
    Steve S.

My 60 has the original rad support and does not have that hole.
