    65 drive shaft balance

Did all drive shafts have balance weights ? My 65 does not have any weights and does not show any signs of having one . It appears to be the original . Is there a way to check the balance without sending it out ?

I think a few made it out the door without balance weights, but the only way to check balance is on a Driveshaft Balancing Machine. I guess you can just install it and check it in the car. If a problem is noticed, remove and balance.

Unless you find a special/old-school driveshaft shop, the weights used are different than back in the day. Fortunately, they almost cannot be seen.

      Bill,
I would imagine a shaft could be within spec with out any weight welded on. Odd or rare but possible. The weights are projection welded in place so if one "fell off" it would be difficult to tell with any weathering from normal use.

If you have the driveshaft out of the car and, especially, if you replace the u-joints, I highly recommend having the driveshaft assembly professionally balanced. Usually, this is not really all that expensive.

If it's in the car now and you're not having any symptoms of driveshaft imbalance, I would not bother to remove it from the car.

Can a driveshaft found to be without weights be properly balanced? Absolutely yes.
