Is there a TI trouble shoot sequence or flow chart

I need to trouble shoot an electrical issue with my TI system! Does anyone have a sequence or flow chart for that process?

Car ran fine one week ago, has fuel and compression, timing has not been changed.

Roy -- There's a full page "Breakerless Ignition System Trouble Diagnosis Procedure" flow chart in April '64 Chevrolet Service News. IIRC, it was updated (different voltage values) about a year later.

Maybe one of the rebuilders has this on their website. If not, I could take a photo and post.

Service manuals of the era should have the procedure... also the Chevrolet Power Manuals from the sevenites, which may be for the HEI, but the troubleshooting procedure for TI and HEI are basically the same when you consider that the function of the remote TI amp was incorporated into the HEI module.

Pickup coil resistance should be in the range of 300-600 ohms IIRC, and wiggle the wire as you are checking. The leads can fatigue and break due to action of the VAC.

Check coil resistance and all connectors - especially the "weatherproof" connector at the amp. A TI quit on me when moisture got into this connector, corroded a terminal and caused a no start condition.

A few years prior, a no start condition led me to remove the amp and the back cover where I found that one of the main power transistor leads (It's mounted on the heat sink) had broken away from the circuit board, so I pushed it back into the via, added a drop of solder, and it was a permanent fix.

The TI worked very well - when it worked - but was prone to sudden failure. At least I was able to repair the problems at no cost. After the last failure, I removed the TI and reinstalled the original single point distributor that I had learned how to "blueprint" and work reliably to 7000 revs.

The TI system sat in a box for nearly 15 years at which point I sold it to David Burroughs who at the time owned the "12-mile" L-88 from which it had originally come from, so the car may have only 12 miles, but the original brown distributor cap has about 50K miles, but at the rate that car is accumulating mileage, the original cap should last another few hundred years.

Roy, also check the ground for the amp. After I had my system restored, I reinstalled everything, jumped in the car to fire it up, but nothing happened. After a little investigating, I found that I had forgotten to attach the stupid ground wire! After getting that taken care of, it fired right up. Apparently these things really need that ground wire so make sure yours isn't broken and has good connection.

Also, Dave has some basic troubleshooting info on his web site. HERE'S the link.

Guys, I have the 1963 Corvette, 1965 Chevrolet interim and 1965 Corvette supplement, shop manuals the are not really a lot of help. I appreciate your continued input. Wayne I do not have a copy or access to a copy of the April 64 Chevrolet Service News.

This may help you. You can also call Dave if you need to he will in most cases give advice.

Nope, you are not being stupid the system became available for the first time in 1964! the service manuals are 1963 and then supplements after that with the 65 supplements being the first mention of TI

Paul, that's what I'm looking for, thank you. Ed may be correct it could be ground related.

Re: Is there a TI trouble shoot sequence or flow chart

Ed -- you're correct; believe it was available on Corvettes early in calendar 1964 (late '63 on Pontiacs). but I don't see any diagnosis procedure in the '64 manuals or newsletters, because I guess they felt it was "trouble-free" .

Roy -- Those Feidler references that Paul posted are what I was referring to.

Thanks guys. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going completely insane. (Partial is okay)

Re: Is there a TI trouble shoot sequence or flow chart

                        Roy,

What year car is the TI installed on and what is the symptom of your problem?

Harnesses are different for the '64-'65 vs the '66 and later cars also, and your harness type is important to know when troubleshooting. Also, there is misleading information in the early diagram and it can be confusing. I have a modified copy of that diagram if needed.
