    L-71 Oil pump and spring

    Went to NAPA today to pick up the oil pump and pickup screen that I ordered for my 435 coupe. I did not order the high pressure pump as has been recommended here. The so called regular pressure pump which is what I ordered came with and extra spring. I have read here that the usual extra spring is yellow which should be substituted for the one in the pump. Mine however came with a dark blue spring, almost black. The instructions that came with the pump read as follows: To repair original H/P Corvette oil pumps #3876868 & 3904826 use the enclosed BLUE spring. I have not taken out the spring in the pump yet, but it is a very dark color. Do any of you guys know what I have here? Obviously I do not want to put the wrong spring in and have the oil pressure be to high. Thanks for any help on this.

    Dave,

    For your information.....

    GM #3904826 is the part number for the 67-69 with special high performance big block, including L-71. I believe it is also the SERVICE replacement for 65-66 with SHP;

    the oil pressure relief spring in this pump (original) is identified as follows:

    24 coils, 2-7/16" free length, 5/16" OD, with light green stripe

    Take care,

    Bob

      Bob,
      Thanks for that info. I should have mentioned in my post that the pump I picked up from NAPA is a Sealed Power with a part # of 224-4154.

        David,

        I installed that pump in a 400hp car last year. I used the installed spring (not the supplied replacement) and the oil pressure was around 35 lbs warm on a motor with about 1000 miles on it. I replaced the pump the engine builder had in it that pegged the gauge.

        Hope that helps!

          Tim,

          Thanks a bunch. That is helpful coming from a NAPA guy. I will stay with spring that is in the pump. I see you from time to time at the YENKO site. I am "material boy" over there. I am into other stuff besides Corvettes. How are you coming on the 62 drag car you are building? At least I think it is a 62 from your posts over at Yenko.net. Thanks for the reply and see ya later.

            All Corvette L-71 used a pump with a HIGH PRESSURE spring. This pump was NOT a high volume pump, though. It's the high volume pumps that are not generally recommended. However, big blocks will do OK with a high volume pump. It's small blocks where they can be a problem and are completely unnecessary.

              All of you guys with 80# gauges might want to verify the accuracy of your gauge before swapping oil pumps. Over the years a lot of 60# gauges were "converted' to 80# gauges, resulting in a lot of pegged gauges.
