    65 rear spring

I am working on my original rear spring . It seemed to have some kind of dried caked on grease or lube on the liners . Does anybody know what was used on the rear spring when built . Also mine had lots of grey paint left on it .

I believe all of the leaves were completely painted grey then the liners were installed. There should not be any grease or other materials on the spring. When you see it in place you will see the grey paint and the black liners.

Bill -- out of curiosity, does the edge of any one of your springs contain the casting "G.L.S" (Great Lakes Steel, I believe) ? This shot was on one of the shorter spring leaves out of my late '65 L78, standard suspension.

2nd pic: very little gray (sort-of) paint (Ionoclad ?) remaining. This shot might be from my early '65 014xx.

My 1969 spring had the "GLS" embossment on the side of one of the leaves, exactly as you pictured.

The gray "paint" was Ionoclad coating. This is an extremely zinc-rich coating. It is no longer available, as far as I know.

Hi Wayne . You got me , I never noticed that before . I took a quick look at mine and found it on all but one .Some were very small some were bigger . Were they mounted with the letters all facing the same direction or just random ? My std.springs were from 17346 .

The manufacturer's ID was on the steel stock that Rockwell manufactured the springs from. It was not added at the time of spring manufacture. So, it's found in random locations.

                  Keith,

The original GM liners were graphite impregnated into polyethylene (At least I think it was polyethylene).

So are the repro liners made that way?

                      Keith,

I don't think I've ever asked any vendors of repro liners what they are made of. If you call Quanta Products, I think they might tell you. Regardless of what they say, the repro liners are different in feel and hue from original GM liners. Unfortunately, the GM liners are discontinued, so repro is the only option if you want new.

                        Bill,

Here is a shot of the spring leafs from my from my SB '65. Note this is a 7 leaf spring which it was not originally born with. It too has the gray much like yours. I have since replaced it with the correct spring.
