    54 tach odometer question

Does anyone know what GM was thinking with the tach odometer and what its supposed to represent? It racks them up all time even when not moving. Im just curious. Thanks

    It's called an hourmeter.

Aircraft, before and after early Corvettes, used the same system on the tachometers, right up to the present day.

Correct, and most of them were manufactured by the Hobbs Co. Anywhere it was important to keep track of engine operating hours, whether on an airplane or on industrial equipment, you'd find a Hobbs hourmeter.

The one on the early Corvettes tracked engine revolutions.

The planes that I've flown had both a Hobbs as well as the tachometer which registered engine revolutions, just like the old Corvette tachs. Usually, when guys fly rental airplanes they prefer to be charged based on the tach readings and not the Hobbs because the tach will usually be a slightly lower reading. However, most rental outfits charge based on Hobbs time (but they do maintenance based on tach time).

I have found the rev meter to be very useful to verify the mileage on a car. I have studied odometers and rev meters on unrestored cars that have both. For the 53-55 Powerglide with 3:55 rear axel the average correlation is 3.3 revs per mile. (The answer will change depending on the final drive ratio for other cars). One can use this when inspecting cars to buy to determine if the odometer has gone around or been turned back. I have never seen the rev meter turned back!
