A friend of mine came across 10 cases of 10 40 in the old cardboard cans. Is the oil still usable? I would say it is around since the late 70's.

Re: motor oil
SF was current from circa '80-'87 until superceded by SG about 1988. The problem with old oil is that over time the additives tend to drop out. I've seen some old oil bottles that when emptied there was a thin film of dark brown sludge at the bottom, which was probably additive drop out.
For this reason I don't recommend maintaining more than about a two year supply of engine oil.
I would recommend you not use this oil in any car you care about. It would be okay for a beater that is one breakdown from the boneyard.
Can you transfer the contents of one bottle to another container and look at the bottom of the bottle? I'm curious as to whether you observe the same dark brown film at the bottom?
One more question: What are the other service categories listed after SF?
