Mid year AC knob lights

Where does the light source come from for the upper AC knobs. With the center plastic duct there how does it get behind And after installing the dash and putting the cables though the ducts and getting things just right. I tip the hat to the factory workers who did that as the car was moving.

Going from memory here, on the ac'd harness, there is 3 lights that you plug in, and the non ac'd only have 2????

Also by memory, I believe the light socket clips to the bottom of the clock tunnel.

Don't be expecting to get a lot of light even when all hooked up correctly. I have a new harness and all new bulbs and all are fairly dim. Of course, next to today's modern dashed they are REALLY dim.

Here's how I think it works on air cars. This is a shot of my '65 with the clock removed; the two visible bulb/socket assemblies plug into the back of the clock. Hidden by the one is a clip/slide-on bracket at the very bottom of the clock mount bracket, just like a non-air car. It has two windows (IIRC) that direct illumination down on the bezels for the "Air Pull Fan" and the "Defroster".

This clock bracket is different for air cars, as it has provision for two more bulb/socket assemblies at the upper edges of each side of the bracket. Again, there are light windows that shine upwards to illuminate the plastic bezels marked "Air Cond Pull" and "Cool In -- Hot Pull". The 2 grey wires from these two lamps form a separate mini-harness, and plug into the right side of the fuse panel.

Thanks after installing that divider duct it seemed to me that not much light if any could get up there. After I instal the dash harnes it might start being more clear.

Note that the two extra "torpedo" lamps on an A/C car are LEFT and RIGHT handed parts, with their little "windows" indexed to the spring clips to illuminate the controls on each side; if you install them backwards, neither control will be illuminated.

You never cease to amaze...this could, possibly, be my issue with barely visible lighting of these two knobs at night...thanx, as always.

And don't forget to change that 4 Amp dash light fuse to a 5 amp for the ac cars.

John, indexing are you kidding me??? now I'm gonna lose sleep trying to figure out if mine are correct. I do see some light on my ac dash controls at night but it is certainly not like the White House Christmas tree that is for sure.

Yup, see your Assembly Manual, section C60, sheet E8, item #4, which is the "hood asm." for the "torpedo" lamp - there are left and right-hand part numbers (3960507 and 08); those hoods (and their green plastic filters, item #7) mount at 3 and 9 o'clock on the clock housing, and their integral welded spring clips are indexed differently relative to the little windows for each side so the light exits pointing at the A/C control cable bezels.

Oh no! I think mine are backward too as I don't have much light either. And I have the 4 amp fuse too!! Guess this will be a cold weather change!!
