    C2 muffler replacement

I am replacing the muffler on my C2. My mufflers are clamped to the mid pipe not welded. What is the best way to replace the muffler? I have referred to the CSM and it instructs to unclamp and separate the system at the cross member. I understand that this assumes I have a welded on muffler, but just wanted to see if perhaps there was a simpler process a member has experienced.

    Thanks

Lawrence, I would still take it off at the center section. You will have an easier time. The clamp at the muffler leaves in indentation in the pipe. You will probably have to borrow a tool to remove the indentation prior to installing the new muffler. Or, just take the pipes to a muffler shop and have them remove the indentation.

    Good Luck

Remove the muffler hanger clamps and the clamps at the exhaust pipe-to-muffler junction. If you can remove the mufflers at this point, do so. Then, install the new mufflers. Done. If you can't separate the mufflers from the exhaust pipe, then you'll have to do as Harry mentions.

Use a "cutoff" wheel to slice the muffler short pipe. Cut parallel to the pipe NOT around the pipe, being careful NOT to cut into the header pipe. Make a couple of slices and you can then separate the muffler from the header pipe. leaving the header intact.

Thanks guys for the replies. I talked to Jimmy Gregg about this after I posted this request and he gave me some pointers as well. Basically, I removed the mufflers from the hangers, loosened the clamps at the cross member, removed the filler panel then wiggled every thing free. While I had the filler panel off I went ahead and replaced the bumper bolts with correct ones that I had. I got everything all back together and so far so good. I went for a 6 mile ride and had no issues. The car sounds a little better but not that much of a change to be honest. Not sure it was worth all the work other than getting the bumper bolts replaced and just learning more about the car.

            Lawrence,
Jimmy did it the way we had to do it years ago as we would only change whatever needed. One t hinge that helped when wiggling and twisting was oil which made it come off much easier.
            Glad your finished.

I had a little oil that was on the joint at the cross member. That did make it a little easier!
