Thanks for weighing in on this, Gary and Joe.

I did check the driveshaft hardware and it's straps and bolts, like the AIM indicated. I'll get the car up and see if I can retrieve the casting date codes to at least verify those.

Here are some photos to show you what we are discussing: the casting date which I photographed today. E 17 2 and The diff. stamping from when I had the rear spring off.

I'd appreciate any comments on what you see here, gentlemen. Thanks for all your help and insight.

The cover was cast May 17, 1972. I can't see any date of the carrier's casting. As I recall, it's on the side of the casting. In any event, if May 17, 1972 predates your car's build date, the cover is probably original to the car.

Appear to be original cover bolts. The housing ( carrier) casting date is on the lower LH side under the axle. Would be a letter and 2-3 digits. If you had the diff out of the car I would say take off the cover to see if anyone was in there and confirm the ratio. The gear ratio and date is stamped into the side of the ring gear. Usually I look for witness marks by the caps, broken posi case webs from sheared RG bolts, cast case shims or aftermarket steel shims between the bearings and housing. If someone was in there in the past then the axle might have been switched, if all looks original then I bet that is what came with it. Again I don't see it being a problem as far as usage or safety.

The casting date on the carrier is B 1 2. Feb 1, 1972 My build date is July 20, 1972
Thanks for the info, Gary. I'll look at it next time I have the diff. out.
