Continually seeing ads on ebay for brass pump washers saying they are correct for Corvettes is driving me nuts! Even saw one in a Duntov car at Nationals. Just want to warn folks that these washers were last used in GM cars in 1951 and they were never used in Corvettes. Only the black plastic vacuum pumps were used except when foot pumps were installed.
The top of this washer is shown in a drawing on page 33 of Noland's Corvette Restoration and Technical Guide Vol. 1. It says this pump was used in late 53/early 54. That's an error. Another error on that page is the photo of the 55 washer bracket in the right hand corner. That's a passenger car bracket.
If you look at the November 25th,1953 body drop photo on page 21 you will see a black plastic pump in the washer jar on the shelf awaiting installation in car 287. There is a much better copy of this photo on page 225 of Noland's Corvette American Legend Vol.1. The black pump is quite clear.
Also I have examined and documented unrestored low mileage 53-54s and all vacuum pumps have been black plastic. For example 53 #181 and 54 #147 both had plastic pumps. So don't be misled.
