I looked through the archives to see if I could find info on intake gaskets for my car. Lots of discussion on 427 oval port gaskets but none on 454 oval ports. Does anyone have a pic of an original gasket for a '72 LS-5 either on or off the car. I read that someone used an razor to trim a fiber gasket to appear original. Since repro gaskets are not close I'm going that route. Thanks!!

Tom------
Attached are photos of a GM #3955526 gasket set[not for sale]. These are the intake manifold gaskets used for all 1969 L-36/L-68 as well as 1970-72 LS-5.

Re: '72 LS-5 Intake manifold gaskets
All-----
An off-board request asked me to provide some more information on the GM #3955526 so here it is:
GM #3955526 was never "officially" superceded. It was discontinued without supercession in March, 1982.
However, in late 1975 the cataloged SERVICE replacement for 66-72 oval port Corvette big blocks was changed to GM #6259379. Why this was done without a discontinuation and supercession of the 3955526 at that time I have no idea. It's a very unusual happening in the GM parts system.
The GM #6259379 was discontinued in November, 1984 and replaced by GM #14019899. GM #14019899 was discontinued in February, 1991 and replaced by GM #10174981. The latter was discontinued a few years ago and, as far as I can tell, without supercession.
I have NOS examples of the 14019899 and 10174981 [not for sale] but I'm too lazy right now to get them out and photograph them. However, my recollection is that the side gaskets differ in configuration from the 3955526. The end gaskets do have the "GM" embossment, though.
I don't know what the GM #6259379 is like (YET).In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: '72 LS-5 Intake manifold gaskets
Here is a copy of a photo in the 67 Service Manual.... possibly the same outline for a 72 BB. I modified some aftermarket gaskets to the same profile for my 427 in the other photo......- Top

Re: '72 LS-5 Intake manifold gaskets
The pics you show are posted elsewhere and are one of the two I referred to when I first posted. The only difference is the sharp angle above the port for cyl. #4 & 5. The ones Joe posted don't have that feature. I guess it was your post that gave me the idea to just trim a set. Thanks!!- Top

One thing to keep in mind: GM did not manufacture gaskets. They were manufactured by outside suppliers. Detroit Gasket and McCord were two of the primary suppliers but there were others, too. It's very possible that different suppliers manufactured the gaskets with slightly different configurations, all meeting the GM specifications for a particular part number. I highly doubt that the feature you mention, whether present or not, would have affected compliance with the GM specification.
So, how would one know what exact gasket was originally used on one's engine? I expect the only way would be to have the original gaskets used on the particular engine. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: '72 LS-5 Intake manifold gaskets
Well put Joe. Most of us, I was 6 when my car was built, have NO idea what some of these small original details are. I had hoped that a pic of an early '72 LS-5 that had not been taken apart would show up. Guess I'll have to hope I see something at Carlisle. Thanks to all!!- Top
