I am looking to purchase a 57 to restore and the title starts with VE57S, but the serial number tag only shows E57S (no V in the front). Is this what it should be showing?

Re: 57 Title
Tony,
Sometimes a common error by States because for years the VIN's started with VE such as 55 Corvette.
Before you purchase, check with the State where it's titled and see how hard it is to get the title corrected. If you're in another State and they have title to VIN inspection requirements you could have a problem getting the '57 title issued. Best to resolve before you purchase.

Re: 57 Title
When I bought my 54 it was titled by the engine number and had no engine . The vin tag was still on the car, I took it to the Il inspection station with all my paperwork before I even unloaded it off the trailer . They changed the title to the Vin number .- Top

Re: 57 Title
Had the same problem. Back in the day the administrative folks at the dealership prepared the papers for applying for a title. The full size Chevy cars started with a C57 for the six cylinder models and a VC57 for the V-8's. As they typed up the Corvettes they many times put a V (for V8) in front of the E57. This is discussed in Noland Adams book - mostly happened in the Northeast where my '57 was titled (CT). I came armed with the book to explain what had happened but my state's (KS) license bureau already knew about it, so no problem. The "no problem" is quite unusual by the way.- Top

Re: 57 Title
Mike Hunt did extensive research about the "V" in the vin numbers. The article below explains much of it, and the other documents include which '56's had the "VE" prefix. The last document isthe '57 survey but no mention of the "VE" prefix on any cars.
edit.....page2 of the first document below lists '57's recorded as "VE" prefixed. Is your Vin# in that list?

Re: 57 Title
I just went through this with a `56 that I had for sale. What I determined is that the pre-printed paper work from Chevrolet had the VE pre-printed and the dealers picked that up and never thought to check it against the actual vin on the tag. Natually that causes a little problem now when you go to title it.
I didnt have much trouble in NC, just showed them examples in Noland`s book, of the printed GM paper work, and original vin tags. There are examples of both right there in the book.- Top
