I'm installing new carpet and rear vinyl trim in a 1963 coupe and I'd like to confirm that the horizontal surfaces directly above the wheel wells are painted the same color as the interior carpet. I'm installing the black vinyl trim around the rear windows and have put the carpet in place, but the interior paint was stripped when the body was restored, so I need to refinsh the uncovered areas directly above the wheel wells between the carpet and the vinyl. If, as I suspect, it is supposed to be the color of the interior trim, black in my case, is there a specific paint I need to use? Should it be matte or semi-gloss? Would I use the same paint as is used in the tool wells behind the seats? Thanks for your advice..

Re: 1963 Coupe interior paint color
Yes, this looks familiar. We stripped the interior down to bare fiberglass and didn't take note of any paint colors back there. It looks, from your photo, as if the horizontal section of fiberglass right above the bump-out of the wheel well is painted black. I know the vinyl goes around the windows, but that flat section from where the vinyl ends and the beginning of the carpeting covering the wheel wells, that area, I can't believe it was left without any color on the fiberglass.- Top

Re: 1963 Coupe interior paint color
Here's another view. My car is factory black/black, so whatever is there is there. I'm going to duplicate the rust colored primer that covered the whole interior before the carpet was laid. I pretty much have the paint lines figured out. The paint around those windows looks very low keyed, so maybe some type of semi gloss or semi flat would work. Evidence proves there was something there, and I'm like you, it's gotta be there, and it's gotta be close to right.[IMG][/IMG]

I did the same thing. Here's a photo of the primer color we used. I then decided to try to quite and cool the car with hushmat. I'll include of photo of this also.5-10-14 Hushmat 3.jpgIMG_6679.jpg- Top

Wow, we are on parallel paths! I had to replace the front clip too. Fortunately my rear rear quarter panel were OK. After 20 months I'm now a few weeks from completion.

Re: 1963 Coupe interior paint color
This image was taken on Monday of this week. It will be 5 years next month since the start of this. I've got 3,500 photos so far of this restoration. It's a " project " car, so it only gets worked on as time allows. Should be cool when it's done, but that won't be for a very long time.[IMG][/IMG]
