Question For the Painters out There.

Here is the latest project we have brought home. My question is to the painters out there. I feel pretty comfortable with a paint gun as long as I am the one who has applied product and knows exactly what was sprayed and when.

I have another car we are just finishing up, so I have a bit of time before we actually tear into this one.

My question is, the seller did not have a list of the products that have been applied to this car. The fact that it was done well over ten years ago throws another twist into things. The body work looks really nice, But I need to try to figure out what is on the car.

Does it really matter what is on the car as long as I use a newer product such as DP to seal it all in. Assuming what is there is done right.

Yes, I know I need to determine if I even trust that first coats of adhesion. Basically, I am asking for any pointers in determining on which direction to go. Strip it all back to glass to make sure I get good base adhesion. Does anyone know a way to test to see if in fact it is or might be DP already on the car? Early or late DP.

Any idea or input would be greatly appreciated at this point.
I even thought about putting the T-tops in color and leave them, along with the rest of the car, outside for the rest of the summer to see how it worked out. See if we get a rise out of anything, if you know what I mean.

The spot by the headlight scares me a bit. It seems that only the front end has any old paint under the black top coat. Everywhere the black is sanded through is bare glass or filler. No old paints or primers.

    Thanks for taking a look.

I would not paint over old paint even if the last painter did a great job and everything is sticking . The reason why is the more material the bigger the paint cracks will be . Fiberglass does allot of expanding and contracting paint does not . Plus you always risk the old finish or primer lifting .

      Bill,
I think you are right. It is not worth the risk of huge potential problems. It seems it is only the front end that has anything under it. Not sure why, but that in itself scares me a bit.
As I dig into it, I will keep you informed to what it is I find under this pretty black top coat.
At least the hood has not been touched. It is very clear to see what kind of work they started with at least.

        Monte,
Strip it. If you want to use DP90, basic for lacquer jobs, it does not like urethane finishes to adhere to. I assume you are planning on using lacquer finish because of the DP base. Keep in mind the lacquer base products needs to cut into the surface all ready there. Urethane products do not cut into previous surface. Solvent in previous paint jobs will continue to release. Strip it.
