    Play in Water Pump shaft

I have my radiator out and the block drained so now would be a good time to get the pump rebuilt if it needed it. About 2 years ago I had a single drop of fluid on the floor at the right spot to indicate a pump leak but have seen nothing since. However, with the fan and pulley out of the way, if I grab the shaft and apply pressure I can feel minor movement of the shaft in the bushing. This is a 38,000 mile car. Should I feel any play at all?

The pump will only continue to become more loose..... Now would be the time to repair it.

The bearing is going out. A good bearing will not have any perceptible play.

When you have the pump rebuilt, upgrade the bearing from the ball-ball type to the ball-roller type. It should provide a good 50 percent longer bearing life.
