    65 BB hood frame loose

DSC_1490.jpgDSC_1491.jpgDSC_1497.jpgDSC_1496.jpgIt seems many 65 /66 BB hood skins are not bonded to the underside . I found a 3M product that does a great job . 3M # 8115 panel bond . It looks good seems strong , its been on mine about a week . We used it at work to bond roofs , door skins , etc. The only hard part is cleaning all the old bond off first .

Problem is, they were never bonded there, and bonding tends to suck the panel down and cause ripples in the hood.

      Bill,

Where did you purchase this 3M product?

      Thanks,

I used a similar product by Locktite. The only thing different I did not firmly clamp together with glue. The glue does not dry rock hard so there is always some give since fiberglass does want to "move".

Exactly. That's why polyurethane roof/flashing sealant is the correct choice for this application.

You can get it and any body shop supply store that sells 3M .You do need a special gun to use it . It does flex slightly . I have two other hoods a 66 grey BB that there is no bond on ???and a new GM hood I bought in about 1981 that has bond . On my 65 white glass hood there was bond residue and you could see an outline where the bond had been before the hood was primed at the factory . It still had the factory prime and black out on it . I think it was bonded when new . The 66 hood I don't know ?

I used 3M 06564 4200 fast cure. It is a Marine polyurethane. It will stay pliable but firm even though it does have some adhesive features. Mine is not a judged car so don`t send the emails. Thanks Mike

Hi Mike , do you think your hood had the bond when new . What color glass or serial number was it ?

Hi Bill I saw no evidence of it but this is actually a 66 hood going on my 65 small block car.

Bill it was gray in color. Or a dirty white color. I put wedges under the frame to pick it up and put a puddle of the urethane down and took the wedges out so that it pushed the material out a little. it looked close to what I had seen in pictures of original. I don`t think it ever had any by the original pictures. Mike

Bill. You would have seen evidence of dum-dum, non hardening material to cushion and dampen vibrations, but it was not bonded.

Wayne . You could be correct ,the old dum dum was allot heavier and held up to heat better . The new stuff even 3M gets hot and runs .It also gets brittle when it gets old .

                          Guys,

Here are some pictures I took of a red '65 big block at Bloomington and a green big block Duntov/Bowtie car at the 2008 NCRS National Convention. These are the best pictures I could find of the bottom side of the hood bonding material. Hope it helps.

                          Regards,

Thanks James. The photos of the green one looks like mine did ,kind of a brownish yellow hard caulk of some kind . It is also in the same spots as mine was. I think Im good .
