    67 Pad prep for Judging

    All,

I'm getting ready for our IN Chapter meet in a few weeks. My L36 pad currently has orange paint on it that I need to remove. I've currently been scrubbing gently with mineral spirits and a soft toothbrush.

What is the best solvent for getting rid of that without damaging the pad itself? I'm hoping for something with a gel consistency that I might apply and leave on to do its work, rather than a liquid that runs off the surface right away.

    Thanks,
    B.D.

Lacquer thinner using a small rag and your finger, or using a Q-tip(s). The Q-tip can be taped to a small wooden dowel or a wooden pencil to provide for easier reach or access.

Navel jelly is often used for removing minor RUST from a bare pad.

Once the paint has been removed from the engine pad, use Pre-lube-6 or engine oil or Vaseline to coat the pad to prevent rusting. This rust-proofing must be repeated a few times each year.

There are gel paint strippers that would work.

Everything Larry mentioned. However, if the pad is a little shiny from rubbing off the orange paint, then you might want to consider applying a light coat of naval jelly and policing it so as to not leave it too long. When the metal looks to be darkening up a bit, clean it off with Simple Green and water. 50/50 mix to delute the acid in the naval jelly and it should look just right. Then apply the Pre-Lube 6. Good luck.

I have successfully used paint thinner on a q-tip and worked a small area such as the size of a dime and then wipe it clean and go
after another "small" area. That way you don't touch the head or block and take paint off some area you don't want to touch.
Also, it will get the paint out of the stamped numbers clean that way. Good luck, take your time and happy cleaning.

Mine only collects lint - how do I get it to make jelly?

I was wondering who would be the first one to make this pun. First prize, Edward
