    Alternator Pulley needs cleaning

I have a f/I car with a zinc pulley on the alternator and it needs cleaning. I've tried various polishes, etc. but nothing cleans it.Can anyone recommend any "solution" to use to clean this pulley? Thanks

    Gerald,
The pulley should be steel with a zinc plating. What is on the pulley that needs cleaning, road grime, rust, corrosion? Maybe is the plating wearing off? If the later it needs to be replated.

Gene,Thanks for your reply. I think I might just have it replated or replace it.Jerry

        Jerry,

Have you tried Rub & Buff? Available from the big box craft stores -- Hobby Lobby, Michaels, etc.

Clean with Simple Green, and then lacquer thinner. Then polish with a product called Rub and Buff, sold at Michael's Craft shop. It is the easiest way to brighten up a tarnished cad or Zink plating. A very little goes a long way, as you will see.. Q-tips or cotton balls are what I used on my windshield washer motor, hood hard ware and an assortment of bolts and other items. Comes in silver, gold and black. Good luck....

            Hi,
Trying most of these materials, I think I will need to repalce the pulley. I would asssume it will be less expensive to repalce it than to re-plate it.

            Thanks for the feedback.

              Jerry,

If that's a original pulley I would always use that instead of any reproduction part. Get the silver rub and buff and give it a try, you will be surprised.
