The current judging manual says natural or semi gloss black. In this photo of a '65 chassis prior to body drop it was painted black.

Ralph, Remember that the yellow was put on the steering box before it was painted black at Saginaw, so it would not show unless the "cheap" black paint wore off. ;-)

for 67's, IIRC both the rag joint and the steering box need to be BOTH either natural or black. The yellow paint daub was put there to show that the steering box cover bolts were torqued down. No yellow daub unless they are natural boxes/rag joints. Just my two cents, but I think I am right.
