    1962 oil cap

What approximate VIN did the 1962 oil cap change from cad plate to flash chrome on a rpo 396/340 hp application.....what are the specifics on an original cap, anyone have a picture of a known original in and outside?

The parts books only list a flash chrome oil cap for 1962. I have a NOS in the box. How many crimp marks on the base?

Dino, Refer back to July 24, 2013. I asked a similiar question.
340 and 360Hp oil cap change over started somewhere in the 2300 Randy and by 2900 the range was pretty much accomplished. Changeover from Cad to chrome that is. Info credit goes to Rev Mike Ernst.
As far as an original chrome cap compared to the original all you have to do is stand back 5 ft to know the difference. Repros are very pretty with show chrome and buffed off detail. Originals have typical flash chrome and aren't that pretty. Or are they.

Story: I lent the founding member of a certain NCRS chapter a minty original '62 chrome oil cap for his 340HP car. He was going to have the car judged. Then would you believe he sold the car with my cap on!!!!! Whew!!!! You know who you are. LOL JD

Unfortunately Jerry I do not have an original cap....the purpose of my thread is to identify what cap I need to locate.....my first step was cad or flash chrome, second is what identifies the real deal...I believe Larry Chilton posted pics of his original cap...maybe he can answer your question on the number of crimps.....for reference can you post a picture of your crimps...LOL

                  Jerry,

My original cap does not have crimps on the base. See photo above.

The crimps connect the main portion or the cap to the base. Mine has eight some have six.

And, in my case, no crimps.
