    68 VIN tag

Just purchased 68 convertible. VIN plate and windshield pillar are rusty. Vin is actually almost disintegrated into two pieces. First off, looks like two small nuts holding it on. Are these nut and bolts still available? Is anyone reproducing VIN plates? I think I can restore this one if not. Thanks for the input.

I believe it should be held on by 2 rosette rivets. I would restore the original even if it's not perfect. Changing a VIN tag on any car can cause some legal problems. I called the state police in my state (IL) and have had them reattach a VIN before. I would check with them first. Just my 2 cents.

Do Not Remove Or Attempt To Restore. Condition Is Not Judged..

The really big problem here is the rusty windshield pillar. If the rust is bad enough (and it probably is), you will need major repairs to make things right. At some point, you may find that your convertible top becomes "loose". This is not caused by any problem with the convertible top but, rather, by the "bending back" of the windshield frame due to weakening of the pillar posts.
