    70 wheel opening undercoating

I reviewed the threads and just wanted to make a comment, get some input and a little confirmation.

The order of application after body assembly was undercoating, primer, color, and blackout was done last. Does this sound correct?

How unusual would it be for one rear wheel well to have under coating and the other to be without? Before beginning the cleaning process I noted that the under coating on the passenger side mirrored the pictures in other threads of know originals. There was no undercoating on the driver's side wheel well other than some rubberized smooth stuff. Maybe the guy on the driver's side was napping.

I am going to try and preserve the passenger side since it is clearly original knowing I can redo the blackout over the top.

Read the recommendations from a couple years ago for the undercoating. Any updates or other stuff out there that does not require special equipment? Alan recommended the 3M #08881

    Thanks,

    Bill

Just an FYI-Looks like the 3M aerosol Schutz is available in the UK. The U.S. government strikes again.

Does anyone know if it is available in the US through an Industrial Finish supplier as is the original Krylon Semi Flat paint?

I already used my Google friend to no avail.

    Thanks,

    Bill

      Bill -

That sequence is correct for the wheel wells.

          Re: 70 wheel opening undercoating

          Hi Bill,
I found that the 08881 went on a bit smoother than the original coating.
I learned that holding the can back from the surface, (required paper and tape to protect the surrounding areas), and spraying several coats with drying time between them, allowed me to duplicate the 'pebble' of the original coating. There were a few places in the original coating that had enough material on them that 'sags' had occurred.
On my 71 there was a swath of undercoating on about 8" of the driver's side rear wheel lip that had red paint over it. It hadn't been corrected.
It's so interesting hearing about your thoughtful approaches to the details!
          Regards,
          Alan

            Hi Alan,

Glad you are back on the forum. Hope you were just taking a nice vacation.

I try and take care of the details but still have a lot to learn.

I am thinking of trying the POR 15 undercoating recently introduced. Based on the pictures the texture looks pretty good. I have had good luck with their products over the years.

I am wondering if I could maybe import the correct 3M aerosol since this is for personal use. The aerosol version is readily available in the UK.

            Thanks, Bill

PS-Did you attempt to preserve what you could of your original undercoating?

              Hi Bill,
I was away vacationing at a cottage on Lake Michigan for 3 weeks. Quite a terrific getaway!
I'm sorry now that I didn't save any of the original undercoating.
I have a few pictures but that's all. Back then I was still using film so the number of pictures I was taking wasn't nearly as great as it now.
I think it's important to notice how really very little of the wells had the undercoating on them. There are some good pictures in Kurt's thread in the 'Similar Post List' below.
              Regards,
              Alan

I imagine lake Michigan is beautiful this time of year. Nice to hear you enjoyed the time there.

I find is fascinating they used so little undercoating too. My rear passenger side actually has a little more undercoating than some of the pictures.

Of course the rear drivers side had almost zero. There was tiny amount on the rear section. The front seems to jibe with Patricks 72 Bowtie pictures.

I will report back on the results of the POR 15 undercoating.

                  Bill
