Numbers on inner fender 70 Conv.

I was cleaning up the Drivers side rear inner fender and found the number 421 in red.

What might the number mean?

My guess would be that it's a job number. Job numbers were assigned in-plant at St. Louis and ran from 1 to 500, consecutively and then started over again. These numbers in grease pencil may be found in several locations on Corvette bodies.

Bill, I have a 2 digit number in crayon stamped on the underside top of my 72 R/F fender once I cleaned the black out. The number is the last two of my job number I believe. Its been a while since I looked at mine.
