1963 Grand Sport Interior Colour???

A good friend is building a 1963 Grand Sport replica and is looking for a paint code or similar for the interior colour. can anyone help please?

Thanks for your reply Jim. Wow there really is so much Grand Sport information out there!
I have gone through and looked at each post and thread but still cannot find the answer Im looking for. Could be that there is no correct answer because each of the 5 (or 6) original Grand Sports were three different colours.

Anyway, in the case of my friends car he has choosen the Mecom Racing Blue ('59 Cadillac Firemist) for the exterior but needs to get a paint code or an accurate description of the interior colour. I believe the best idea is to identify one of the interior colours available in 1963, and in this case the Dark Blue, that I have seen.

Jim can you pass onto me the colour codes or similar of the 1963 Dark Blue interior or any of the others that were availble for the 1963 model??

Could be that there is no correct answer because each of the 5 (or 6) original Grand Sports were three different colours.

It's my belief that the interiors of all five (there was never a 6th) were painted about the same time and I'd expect the original color to be consistent from car to car. Modern interpretations of the Grand Sports have interior colors which are all over the map, either out of ignorance or personal preference.

In general, I think this is a safe strategy. Find a color which was true to the period and you'll probably be in good shape. You say dark blue. Pictures I've seen do not suggest a dark color. I'd describe the correct shade as a blue with slate-gray overtones.

If you go back to the CF thread, you'll find a link to pictures of the interior of GS #004 as it looks after restoration. To my eye, that color looks about right.

I would if I had them, but I just don't have that information.

When I was selecting paint for the interior of one of mine, I looked at a gazzillion paint chips until I found one which matched the color I thought I wanted.


Seriously consider joining CF or having your friend join CF and post your question there. Taking nothing away from this forum, it just turns out that CF is a "target rich environment" for GS people and you'll get some high quality answers there.

Bryon, check pics of original GS's that have been restored or a pic of the original interior Wintersteen GS . There are pics in the GS book and others along with online. Also, check with Mongoose Motorsports and Duntov Motors as their repros are very close in color. The 1963 production interior is way darker than the GS blue and not even close. Production color is dark like exterior Daytona Blue and GS color is medium or lighter blue. Steve

Thanks for the input Steven, I will check to see if Duntov have an actual paint code that they have found to be as close as possible to being correct as I believe that they are closer to the "source" of correctness than Mongoose.

Thanks Jim I agree with your description of "blue with slate grey overtones" and also believe (rightly or wrongly) that GS #004 after the restoration should become the benchmark.

I now have a good selection of pictures from the net to look at but am not confident that the image/s are true enough to get a good read on for an actual colour match so rather than being just another "interpretation" I will continue to try and source an actual paint code that has been used on GS #004.
