'67 Tonawanda Engine Pad stamp; digit "4"

This was mentioned in the last month, but danged if I can find the thread.

The character "4" has a ski slope diagonal curve and a short vertical, leaving an open top.

Correct, allowable variation, or no way ?

    Hi Wayne,
Looked through my files and found one like it on a T0410 IL. Looks like the stamper got at least two with the goofy 4. I'm in the no way camp..7116983 T0410 IL.JPG

I have no opinion whether that pad is real or not but, that 4 was definitely used during model year 1967, no doubt about it.

You must realize that these characters were hit with a large heavy hammer thousands of times. They are hardened steel and they broke and spread the holders with every blow!!!!
GM whether it was the Flint or Tonowanda plant or St. Louis did not stop production because of a broken letter or a loose holder.
Trying to call a stamp pad bad from the characters will get you in more trouble than you can imagine!!!! Look at the pad and notice the sharp corners and the milling marks around the head especially at the dipstick!
I can and have ordered several sets of numbers and letters from more than one supplier. Just as GM did back in the 60's!!! You want a particular character on your pad, I got your number!!! This is not an ad as I do not stamp blocks for anyone!!!!

          Yeah, right.

I'll at least note that a lot of the "broach marks" on that pad are "post Tonawanda" in origin.
