    Glass Cleaning Question.........C6....

I am trying to clean the glass in my 2006 coupe and having a tough time doing it. Originally, when I bought the car (new in 2006) the glass would clean easily. Now , I seem to be left with a film on the inside of the glass. I have tried many different cleaners, ie. windex, glass plus, vinegar and water, and still have a film. Any special wipers I should use with the glass cleaner? The car sits in my garage a lot with the windows closed. I am wondering if it is some sort of plastic chemical reaction taking place inside the car. The temperature is constantly between 60 and 75 deg. all the time. Anyone with thoughts?

I just use a damp cloth on a cool dash to clean the dash. This film is also on the side and back windows too.

This film is caused by the "outgassing" of plasticizers from the various plastic interior components. There's nothing new about this; it affected cars in the 60's just as it does today. Of course, the complexities of plastics today might make for plasticizers that cause a much more tenacious film.

Joe is right about the film being from the plasticizers in the plastic interior components. I found GM Glass Cleaner and a surgically clean microfiber towel work the best. Do not reuse the towel. Use a different one for each window -- about foot square towels work best. Wash those towels often and air dry them -- no dryer or drier sheets. I believe Stoners Invisible Glass Cleaner will also work well, but I haven't used it myself.

Now for reaching all parts of the back glass in a coupe? Sorry I don't have the answer for that, unless you have a friend who is an Olympic class swimmer or perhaps a pro basketball player. And don't tell me about the triangular window cleaning tools. Been there and done that. They rank right with the late night infomercials.

If your car is parked in the hot sun often enough the out-gassing will be reduced, but the inside bezels on the A-pillars will get pock marks that don't go away. It is all just part of the patina. It is best to learn to enjoy it.

Thanks Joe. I will perhaps try wiping the interior glass with methyl hydrate and see if that helps. Also think I will leave windows open when storing it in my garage? As for glass cleaners, are there any that stand out?

                Larry,

Stoner's Invisible Glass is the best auto glass cleaner I've used. Generally available in spray or wipes at the chain auto parts stores

I open the hatch, lean in from the side, and have no problem reaching all of the back glass. I'll show you in a week if you wish.

Adam's makes a great cleaner for microfiber towels. You don't have to use it every wash, either.

I have dried the microfiber towels in every way imaginable to see what works best. I have not personally found any difference between drying them by air or on Low setting in the drier. Either way there seems to be a random chance they may shed. The techs at Adams agreed with me, FWIW.

I've always used the GM glass cleaner. In fact, I've used it for more than 45 years. However, I believe the Stoner's Glass Cleaner is the same product with a different label.

We can demonstrate the proper C6 rear glass cleaning methods in our spare time next week. I suspect you will have more spare time than I. I also suspect the differences in our physical dimensions make this task easier for you and not so much for me.

I don't use the clothes dryer for the microfiber towels -- any of them. The girls seem to think dryer sheets are God's gift to mankind and I believe the insides of the dryer are contaminated with whatever is in that stuff. I can tell if the towles are put in the dryer by their performance, or more accurately their lack of same.

NAPA has a glass cleaner with ammonia that works great. It's also 50% off currently.

+1 on using microfiber glass towels...this makes a huge difference in getting a streak-free finish.

Check out The Rag Company (in Idaho) for some high-quality microfiber towels. They are every bit as good as the microfiber from Adams, but much more reasonable in price.

The best glass cleaner is the one you can make yourself. Mix 50% water and 50% rubbing alcohol. That and plain old paper towels. Been using that combination for decades.
