    67 posi clutch pacs

I'm in the process of replacing the clutch pacs in my diff. the one's I took out are solid, the one's I got from my vendor are " snow flake" design , it is a GM product . Could some one tell me the difference , and if I should go with the snow flake or look for the solid version. Thanks in advance Jeff

The solid ones are better. However, I do not know of a current source for them. Gary Ramadei might, though.

Jeff, Could the clutch packs still be good and all you need to do is get a thicker spacer by the differential gear.

        Re: 67 posi clutch pacs

I'm surprised to see them still being sold. Your 67's Eaton posi came with solids and are better then the 71-79 "snowflake", a term I started using years ago for this style. There was no perfect posi used in the 63 to 82 run. The original, optional posi, for 63-64 was a Dana unit. I still see some come in from time to time and are obsolete and weak. The 65-68 used what I call the first design Eaton, noted by the 1" square window, 10-18 spiders, and solid clutches. The 2nd design Eaton has the "tear drop" window and in 71 got the much better 10-17 spiders but also the weaker "snowflakes". I have taken apart more snowflake posi's then I can recall and the ones that were pushed hard came out in pieces. It was an attempt to resolve the common clutch hammering but didn't work - only weakened them. I use the solid steels still and tune the posi to application. This will extend the life of the unit, eliminates the hammering and helps prevent cracks from forming if the case is properly polished. The springs & plates are not used in this type of build. Contrary to what many say, when tuned correctly, they out perform a stock spring posi. Now with all that said, probably more then you care to hear, if you measure your clutches and they are in the 068-69" range you probably could reuse them. I always use new but I'm sure that others reuse them. I would keep the lash about 002" if you run the springs/plates. If you don't push the car hard you can use the snowflakes, your call but I would use the solids. If I can help shoot me an email. You can see what posi tuning is all about on You tube, just look up Tom's posi tuning and see my buddy Tom setup a vette posi case. You can find my threads with all the pictures on DC as well.Good luck.

Joe,Any Eaton distributor should be able to get them, I don't have the number here or committed to memory. I probably have 6-7 sets on the shelf.

              Gary-------

OK, thanks. I am mistaken. I thought that they were no longer manufactured. Apparently, when GM discontinued them in favor of the "snowflake" style, Eaton kept manufacturing them for their own distribution channels.

By the way, the current GM clutch pack is GM #12524505. These replaced the earlier "snowflake" style. I wonder what style these are?

                Jeffrey.

You may obtain the number or service to replace them from Pat Ikerd in New Bedford Indiana. He's been selling and servicing rear ends for years. You will see him set up at NCRS Florida, Bloomington and Corvette Carlisle. Pat can be reached by calling 1 812 279-4828. I'm sure he has some on the shelf and knows the part number.
