    '65 Goodwood and/or Crocus Yellow???

    Hello again,

    My question this time is:

Were there 2 yellow exterior colors in '65?

In Dobbin's '63-'67 Fact Book he lists TWO '65 exterior yellows: Goodwood and Crocus. He even lists the DuPont and Ditzler paint codes for both colors. I have only seen Goodwood yellow listed in other publications (e.g. Colvin's "By the Numbers"). FYI, I do NOT own a yellow '65. Rather, I just noticed this "inconsistency" while going through Dobbin's book this weekend.

Any info. on this "crocus" yellow would be appreciated.

The NCRS Spec Guide for 53-67 states 1,275 GOLDWOOD Yellow (paint code XX)produced in 1965 and 5 Unkown Special Paint or Primer. Crocus Yellow is not listed but I suppose could have been included as a special paint. Hopefully someone else can shed some more light on your question.

      Re: '65 Crocus Yellow

John, this color apparently never made it into production for Corvettes; however, as shown in Colvin's book, it was available on '65 Impalas, Malibus and Nova SSs. As yellow reappeared in '65, after 7 year's absence, it's doubtful they would go overboard and offer TWO shades. The dealer showroom brochure makes no mention of Crocus Yellow, but the GM Corvette Parts Manual '53-'70 DOES show it, (in addition to Goldwood yellow - code XX) as code (single) Y, and gives the Lucite(Dupont), R-M, and Ditzler stock #s. Corvette, America's Star-Spangled Sports Car, by Carl Ludvigsen (1973) also lists Crocus in the appendix, as do other special interest books that relied on contemporary GM information.

On the subject of '65 paint codes, Noland's Vol 2 shows silver as code ZZ, rather than the commonly accepted QQ. I believe '65 VIN # 00001 is the only Corvette with a ZZ code.

John, you say you don't have one, but maybe you should, as there were only 84 more yellows prouced than the rarest color (black); but then, I'm biased.

        Wayne,

        Thanks for the response.

Just curious, what does the Goodwood Yellow look like? Is it a bright yellow, or more toned down. From my A-body background the only two yellows I'm familiar with are Butternut yellow and Daytona yellow. Butternut is more along the lines of a creamy/beige color, while Daytona is a bright "lemon" yellow.

I'll keep my eyes open for a '65 Goodwood yellow Corvette - to see it in person - If you haven't gotten to it yet.

        Thanks, John R.

          Re: '65 Goldwood Yellow

John, this color is close to the A-body Butternut, but with a touch more yellow, and far from the screaming Daytona yellow of '69/'70. Also, it's lighter than the Sunfire yellow of '66 and '67 Corvettes. By the way, don't confuse this color with Goodwood GREEN, a '67 Corvette color named after a British race track near Goodwood Park, near Sussex. I'm not familiar with the heritage of the name GOLDWOOD (the '65 yellow), but it may be associated with plants, like butternut and crocus. Remember, these were the innocent years.

            Wayne,

Thanks again. The Goodwood/Goldwood was an error on my part, but don't worry I won't get the yellow and green confused when I see one.

I originally planned on purchasing a '65 because I like that seat pattern best of all the mid-years (and it's my birthyear). But in my low-end-of-the-price-range $ area I didn't find a nice '65. I ended up with a white '67 (originally Marina Blue). The thing I like best about the '67 is that I don't bang my knee on the parking brake.

FYI: I own a blue "65" and have the Ditzler paint chip chart for that year in my documentation manual. The page is devoted to 1965 Chevrolet colors.Chevelle-chevy II -Corvair_Corvette. There are only 2 yellows listed for all cars. Goldwood yellow 81450 and Crocus Yellow 81500. I have always admired Crocus yellow. Enough to paint an Austin Healy Sprite that color in 1968. Actually I had noticed the color on a 1965 GTO-(called Mayfair Maize by Pontiac). Therefore I would suggest that Crocus yellow is the same as used on the Chevelles and GTOs. Jack NCRS#896
