How about an indirect non-answer? I found that many catalog companies carry the oil cannister with the silk screen already in place, but very few will do just the silk screening. I THINK that Paragon will still do this but, if I remember correctly from about five years ago, the silk screening was as expensive as buying a canister with it in place.

      Joe,
When I rebuilt my 57 several years ago, I sand blasted the oil canister, cleaned it up, primed and painted semi-flat black and then applied a decal that had all the info on it. When the decal was dry I sealed it with clear spray krylon. It has held to this day although I am careful when I clean it at oil changes. Much cheaper. The sand blasting was necessary to remove rust. If yours is good you can probably just sand and paint.

Ditto on what Ted said. Mine looks great but, as Ted said, you had better be sure it is clean, clean, clean!

And, if you intend to have the car judged, you'll take a deduction for the decal; the difference between it and the silk-screening is quite obvious.

I drive my '56 and do not plan to have it judged. I do know that you take a deduction for the decal. It does look alright when you view it in the background with the hood open.

There seem to be two types of "decals." One is the water soluble type like you used to put on model airplanes. These look a lot better than the "peel and stick" type. I tried one of these and immediately took the canister to the wire wheel, took off the label, and the paint, repainted and ordered one of the soak in water types.
