    62 Door Construction - Drain?

After removing the window and regulator assemblies from the doors on my 62, I was inspecting the bottoms of the doors for damage and debris. I was surprised to find that the driver door has a series of drain holes across the bottom and the passenger door does not. I am led to believe that this is a factory defect and they were just missed during the assembly. The doors have every indication of being original as they still have the black out and the the job code is on the inner wall of the right one. I am curious what other members have found to be the "norm" on their own doors. Thanks. Eric

    Eric:

The "drain holes" to which you refer were actually used to retain the door weatherstrip. Original weatherstrip enclosed a wire with diamond shaped protrusions every four inches or so. These protrusions were then pushed into the holes. Earlier straight axle cars did not use this type of weatherstrip and will not have the doors drilled.

If the job number you mentioned is the same on both doors, then you certainly have a unique situation. If not, the probability is that the right door is a replacement from an earlier model.

Ed, Thanks for getting back with me. The right door contains the same job #143 in green that is found in several other places such as under the dash housing and in the engine compartment on the firewall. The left door does not have the same mark (which I understand is normal) but is identical in the body paint overspray and blackout.

After looking at both doors (with weatherstip still in place) I see where the strip is attached very close to the outside edge of the door. Both are retained as you have said with retaining holes every 4" or so. The holes in the left door are centered in the flat surface about even with the windows bottom edge.

Since I have looked at it again it doesn't make much sense for it to be for drainage as the holes are inside of the weatherstrip. I guess I will ponder it a bit longer. Thanks again, Eric

I have the same style on my '60.... Yes, I believe that they are drain holes....they are slots (4 of them) about 3" slot total length... I have them on both doors!

Thanks for the response, after further cleaning and inspection I have found both my windows to have the same production dates and there is no signs that the panels have been apart before. I have to believe that this is original and was another of many production oddities. Thanks again - Eric
