I have a question about my radio in my 1971. While it is playing, the stereo light goes on and off. Does this mean there is a problem with the radio, or just a reception problem. When the light it on, the sound is in stereo and vice versa. If you think there is a problem, can you help me or recommend someone that can. Thanks, John

That is usually due to poor reception. If it does this on all stations, there may be a problem with the antenna or the antenna ground strap or ground plate.

Hey Thanks for your reply, I look the ground plate and ground strap up in my assembly manual and went out and looked to see if it was there. That all looked correct. Any other ideas would be appreciated.Comment

could be the integrity of internal circuitry not working to snuff based on component age, Etc. Or, higher probability here, the antenna and lead-in cable isn't 100% resulting in artificially low signal reception. Take the $6 diagnostic approach!
If it's the antenna, the problem should get MUCH worse in AM mode. Go to WalMart or Radio Shack and buy an el cheapo replacement antenna with captive lead-in cable (you're only going to use it as a diagnostic tool). Remove the RH front center console access panel, reach around and carefully jiggle and remove the radio's antenna connection bannana plug.
Install the replacement antenna and test to see if the problem EVAPORATES. Note, Corvette antenna is specifically mounted at the rear of the car to get away from engine compartment RF interference. If the engine is running when you test, you will probably want a helper to 'walk' the antenna out the passenger door and move as far back as possible to get clean reception.
MANY times the original antenna lead-in cable gets fractured as a result of poor handling during R&R (remove and replace) of the radio/center cluster as well as during interior carpet replacement. Good luck!
If the antenna swap diagnostic doesn't point to the antenna/lead-in cable, it's time to pull the radio chassis and go through it on the bench. If you're an EE or electrical tech, all you need is Delco's or HW Sam's radio repair manual. If you're not skilled in this area, remember GM tooled a number of independent AC/United Delco shops coast to coast and many are still in business, armed with tech data to go to work and repair your radio for you!Comment
