There I was at the top of 3rd gear in my 28,000 mile, very original 70 LS5, when my original (Tonowanda overspray) waterpump bypass hose ruptured like Mt. St. Helens. It soaked every sqaure inch of my engine bay so thoroughly, it killed the ignition.

Re: Aaahhh...the joys of orginality.....
Too many original parts on a 30-40 year old car is a recipe for getting in a lot of time hiking. Belts, hoses, plug wires, original aluminum radiators, etc. all really need to be replaced, even if they appear ok from the outside. Original tires are really risky, but most of those folks have on separate rims for show only.- Top

Re: Aaahhh...the joys of orginality.....
You were lucky that was all that happened.
I was driving home from a show a few years back and threw one of the original smog pump belts (45,000 mi.). I knew it was tired but since it was just the smog pump belt, I figured "why worry"? Well, the belt breaks and starts by slapping the underside of my hood hard enough to pop off a quarter sized piece of pretty red correct laquer. The "original" belt then flys around the front of the engine getting all caught up in the other belts and pulleys. The A/C compressor bracket mounting stud is attached, along with the exhaust manifold, screwed into the head and the stud breaks off inside the head. The broken cast iron bracket was still available from GM but the broken aluminum bracket had to be heiliarced back into shape. Since the head will need to come off in order to fix the broken stud, I might as well do a valve job because the "original" guides are worn and she smokes a bit at start up. If the heads are coming off I might as well tear the "original" bottom end down while I am at it because it has a slight lower end noise I have always worried about.
"Originality" sucks!
