C-2 valve covers decal removal / replacement

HELP! This querie may be after the fact but here goes. The decals on my 66 small block 350HP were in need of replacement. I applied lacquer thinner with a rag and removed most of the old deteriorated decal. Then proceeded to rub the remaining "stuff" off using a scuffy-type pad w/lacquer thinner as suggested by a NCRS member who had done this before. The problem is the original "cast aluminum" appearance is gone and the surface is now shiny. What can I do to return the original appearance? I would appreciate all help on this problem.

Also...what is the correct procedure to apply the new decals? Placement according to the judging manual is "centered". What is the vertical distance from the bottom of the valve cover? Should any clear heat-resistant lacquer be applied over the decal? Thanx in advance for any help you can give me. Dick #31008

    Dick,

As far as restoring the orginal look of the valve covers, I would suggest using one of the techniques described by others on the DB, namely, the use of aluminum jelly or Alumiprep and then gentle and uniform scrubbing of the jelly into the surface with a Scothbrite pad. I would suggest limiting the time that the jelly is in contact with the valve cover and then increasing the time if the surface is not yet uniform in patina.

Dick- Don't want to be sarcastic regarding decal placement but I would suggest downing a few Pabst Blue Ribbons, wait 'til they are in full effect, go out to your garage and put them (the decals) on with probably the same care that was originally exercised. That way they'll be properly askance with- if you're really good- a few wrinkles or bubbles---the same way the car left St. Louis.I am of course presuming that Blue Ribbon is still being brewed.

        Dick,

In the decal is the word "horsepower" , center this word in the middle of valve cover. The top of the decal should be about 1/2 inch down from last rib of valve cover.

A product I use to remove grease and adhesive residu is "Desolvit", found in the household cleaner section of grocery stores. My spelling of the name may not be exact but is close.
