Went for a short drive before the winter closes in and the needle on my 67' L79 Roadster speedometer started fluctuating about 10 miles up and down and making the most annoying ticking. Seemed to get worse as the day went on! Is it time for the gauges to be rebuilt or does it sound like a cable problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated!! Mike Arteaga

Re: My C2 speedometer is ticking like a bomb!
I've had similar problems with my speedo in my 76. The problem comes and goes. In fact, the odometer does not work anymore either. I believe the previous owner replaced the speedo cable to correct the problem, several years ago. The speedo will jump up and down and make that clicking sound, almost as if a turn signal is on. I don't know if the odometer and speedo are tied to the same cable or not. Good luck.

If you will remove the cable from your transmission and your speedo head, you can then pull it out and clean it. My 66 did the same thing until I pulled the cable, took out the inner cable and flushed the core of the cable. Once it was clean, I lubed the inner cable and re-installed it for a quite operation. This is a fairly basic job and only takes an hour or so. I am pretty certain that GM makes a good quality speedo cable lube.
