Jim- Ive used both white lithium grease or Mobil 1 synthetic red moly grease on my
C-1. I prefer the synthetic because it seems to work better in cold weather.Last time I lubed the cables was in 1997 and I drive mine a lot.

      Donald and Jim---

Yes, I think that the synthetic greases are, without a doubt, the way to go for speedo cable lube. Even though I don't need to worry too much about low temperature operation here in California, the low temp advantages of the synthetic are VERY nice to have. If you wish to use a moly-fortified synthetic, use Valvoline SynPower Synthetic Grease Product #985. However, for the speedo cable application, the Mobil 1 product that Donald mentioned will work just as well. I use the Valvoline SynPower synthetic since it helps me to "consolidate" the greases used on my cars. Like this:

Valvoline #985-----wheel bearings, speedo/tach lube, clutch release bearing

GM #1960954--------alternator, distributor, starter (this product is discontinued)

      GM #12345579-------weatherstrips, spark plug boots

GM #12377985-------just about everything else requiring grease

Hey Guys, Let me ask a dumb question though... how do ya get the grease into the cable assembly?
        Thanks

Jim- On a C-1 and I guess its the same on most one unscrews the cable in back of the speedo or tach. Pull out the cable, clean and on a clean rag put a small amount of grease ,run cable through the grease returning the cable back and tightening the
screw back to speedo. A messy job to say the least.

It's a good idea to lube new replacement/reproduction tach and speedo cables as well before you install them - every one I've ever bought has had a raw, dry flex shaft; lots easier to lube them out of the car, and I've never had one require lube later in its life.

Yeah, but John, you keep turning over your cars. You've got to come up
with a fleet that will last "forever".

                Duke,

You mean his fleet might last "forever," but that would be seven owners later.

I think John has a rule whereby nothing can stay for more than, say 7-10 years. And I mean nothing.

Yeah, whats up with that dry shaft anyway...seems dumb. I also like to stop with the grease about 8 inches shy of the spedometer head to keep the grease from migrating up into the head, seems like I read that somewhere....Craig
