Re: C1 Master Cylnder
Richard,
I usually glass bead The Master cylinders. They get a fair amount of rust on them and glass bead gets them as close to perfect as possible. The beads won't hurt the bore if it is not pitted, and a little 320 hone will polish it right back up. It is however, rare to find an original that does not need sleeving, but if it already has been sleeved then just hone it back smooth.

Richard:
If you have removed all of your seals, etc., in prep for a rebuild, then I like lacquer thinner or, even better, acetone. The best way to achieve the desired effect is to agitate the immersion as much as possible. Both of these solvents are highly aggressive (with acetone being slightly more so), and will attack any rubber components in contact. They both evaporate very quickly (with acetone being slightly more volatile), but compressed air works best.

Thanks for the information. How does one determine if the unit needs to be sleeved?

Re: C1 Master Cylinder
Richard,
If the bore is pitted and can't be honed to a smooth finish then it needs to be sleeved. If you have yours sleeved, the general consensus is to go brass rather than stainless. It will wear in smooth sooner and be less likely to accelerate wear on the pistons.

Re: C1 Master Cylinder
I had Apple Hydraulics on Long Island redo my original MC for my 61. great job,
quick, inexpensive. Brass is what I chose. For the little bit of money and time (up and back in 20 days) I would not even look at the bore. Apple is 800-882-7753 I spoke with Lazar. good luck.

Another good source is White Post Restoration.(www.whitepost.com)I live 50 miles from them and the turnaround by UPS was less than 72 hours. They have sleeved and rebuilt 2 for me. Cost $158.00 a pop which includes shipping.- Top
