Re: spare tire for 64 corvette
Wheel rims were 15 x 5.5-inch. Original tire was 6.70x15 bias ply. If factory concours 'correct' isn't a concern (non-DOT rubber and tread from an originally recognized supplier to Corvette factory), you can still find 3rd party rubber of this size new in wrapper at various ma/pa tire stores and scrap yards.
Since the tire size designations (6.70 x 15; P205-70-15) are generic categories (specific geometry of each mfgr's offering varies slightly), you'll want to 'test' anything you purchase against the tire tub dimensions of your car before you finalize the deal. Many will look at their 'books' and tell you this & that is an 'exact' replacement for an original 6.70x15, but be warry--the Corvette tire tub didn't have generous design saftey margin to spare in terms of overall diameter and width!
For the basic driver application, we set customers up with a correct 15x5.5 steel wheel and wrap it with new but off-brand 6.70x15 (Atlas, Etc.) tire. Fits and works great! If you know where to look, such tires can be picked up for a 'song' ($15-30 range). Once you leave the original design envelope/size, you have to mount and test fit the spare inside your tub.- Top
