    exhaust clamps for C2

What's the correct size of clamps (guillotine) for '67 427/435 coupe...2" or 2 1/2". Thanks, Ray.

    Ray------

2-1/2" is the correct size. All Corvette big block exhaust systems used 2-1/2" diameter pipe EXCEPT those 427 systems used for the 1969 model year. For 1969, ALL Corvette exhaust systems were 2", from base 350 to ZL-1. ALL Corvette big block exhaust manifolds are 2-1/2" outlet size, though.

Anyone know where you can get guillotine 2" for small block. I tired several Corvette parts houses - Long Island, Dr. Rebuild, etc. Nobody has them just the standard clamps that you can get anywhere.

          Dave -

Long Island has the 2" guillotine clamps - just bought some; their #33-41B, $5.00/pr. I don't know if they're "correct" or not (they have 3/8"-16 threads and 9/16" hex nuts), but they're as close as I could find anywhere.

Paragon offers both 2 and 2.5-inch Guillotine clamps and you can have them in 'generic' form (ID size embossed on lower cross member) or in concours/correct form ranging from $5 to $15 per clamp....

What's the correct finish - "natural" or plated zinc?

That's one I know I don't know, Pat. Every time I've come across a real McCoy original clamp, it's been so badly weathered that it was virtually impossible to determine the original finish. I'd GUESS they were carbon steel with maybe a LIGHT zinc plate. They were NOT SS and they were pretty cheap/flimsy which might explain why originals are hard to come by (replaced pretty quickly).

                  Jack; follow-up on Paragon clamps

                  Jack,

In the Paragon catolog I looked in last night, it appears that the "correct" $15 clamps are designated for 68 (or 69?) and later Corvettes. Are these same clamps correct for mid-year cars?

                    Jack,

I have a few originals, likely enough to do one car. They're rusted, but I've cleaned them up a fair amount. I think even zinc would rust quickly in the hot and wet environs of the exhaust pipes under the car.

Before I try and prepare them for use, I'd like to know what my finish will be. It's a lot easier to replate zinc than reproduce carbon steel appearance.

The stamped portion of the guillotine clamps I got from LICS are "natural", and the U-bolt portion and the nuts are black oxide. These are designed to be used at the center crossmember hanger joints (and the joint in front of the muffler with non-welded replacement mufflers). They also have an otherwise identical "lighter-duty" 2" guillotine clamp with 5/16"-18 threads and 1/2" hex nuts (#33-41A) for clamping the stainless extensions to the muffler outlet pipes.
