    1966 427/425 HP Identification

It seems my question may be timely with many 1966 L72 owners discussing their vehicles.

I am entertaining purchasing a '66 convertible claimed to be an orignal L72. Please advise me of any items/features to look for over and above those listed in Nolan Adams' book.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Don Walker

Don - without having access to what Noland mentions handy, things to look for are presence of the TI amp in the drivers side wheel well on front (or 3 holes). Also look for no holes in the firewall near the brake master cylinder area for ballast resistor mounting. It should have a 1100696 42A alternator, and of course all the big block items on the driveline and chassis such as rear sway bar, cap style halfshaft mounts, etc. Should also have the BB style fuel line on the RH frame, more of a 90 degree bend towards the fuel pump than the small block. Tach of course is the 6500rpm redline. All of the above can be done to a small block car with work...and, most is common to a 427/390 car, except for the TI ign K66 (that may have been an option on that car too). Then there are the obvious engine differences, 5069 aluminum intake, IP stamp on the block, look for the 4 bolt main version of the 942 block with large tapped and plugged holes above the oil filter boss....correct Holley carb (I don't remember the Holley list number and GM part number off the top of my head).

    I probably forgot more....Craig

Don, fake and cloned cars, especially mid year big blocks, are everywhere. That's why I put considerable emphasis on documentation, and especially owner history. See if you can contact previous owners to verify what your looking at.
If you can't contact any previous owners, hire an L72 expert to check the car out with you.
