Currently performing a frame off on the 54. I have found the rear crossmember is rusted thru and will need replaced. Questions are ..what is the best replacement option? Finding an OEM crossmember (if they are out there) , using a crossmember off a used frame or having someone custom fab one. Second - cutting the factory rivets off to replace the rail are no big deal - How do I go about reproducing the factory look - are oem style rivet out there and where, how does one go about installing them - is there a special tool. I am assuming it would involve heating the rivet cherry hot and then compressing it with some type of air tool. I def dont want to bolt it on - that is not an option. Any feedback is welcome. thanks

Re: C1 54 Frame crossmember repair
Chris,
Replacement rear frame crossmembers are not identical to your '54. They are functional but not identical. Easily identified by a judge, should that matter to you. Replacements wil have nine holes across the bottom side (of which five can be welded closed and ground down if you wish). More importantly the spring hangers supports are of a different configuration. This difference changes the angle of the rear spring ever so slightly. I believe repro rivets are available. Were it my project, I'd have it professionally riveted (and welded) back on. Regards,- Top

Re: C1 54 Frame crossmember repair
I was looking thru the driveline and found an ad for a OEM rear crossmember, but was already sold, I started scanning Hemmings and after 1 call was directed to Vette Products in Mich 248 693-1907. Spoke with Neal who was very helpful. I did buy a rear crossmember for 269.00 As for the holes I dont what it looks like but will keep you posted. They sell a complete frame assy for 4000.00. I got on Yahoo and found their website. Appears they carry numerous items. So I ordered a catalog.1954 Corvette #3803 - Top Flight 2012, Bloomington Gold 2012,
