    Engine Compartment Black Paint

Is either Plasti-kote Universal Black #203 or Flat Black #230 appropriate, or something else?

    Scott,
There are several posts on this in the archives. Many people say Blitz Black from the John Deere Dealer or Krylon from your local discount stores. I have been using Krylon and think the results are excellent. I have used the glossy black and the semi-flat on my 65 Roadster andI am very happy with how it looks. Good luck.

      Can't beat that Plasti-Koat! Krylon's great too.

I personally like the Plasticoat T3. It's semi gloss and it's laquer. It works especially well when doing partials, seeming to leave less of a dry area where the new meets the old. I've done big parts like cowls and inner skirts with it also. The semi gloss Krylon has worked well also. The only down side I've found to the T3 is that it seems to blush a little worse when sprayed in high humidity conditions.

          Dale,

Are you ill? Should I come down and make a house call? I've never heard of you NOT recommending the John Deere Blitz Black.

Personally, I'm not much for the Krylon. I've used the Underhood Black from Eastwood and it was OK. When I ever get far enough on our 66, it's going to have the John Deere Blitz Black under the hood.

"ALL the questions have been answered over and over again!"

Except for the one dumb question in Corvettes, correct? You've continued to say that one hasn't been asked yet.

Dale, if "All the questions have been answered over and over again", then what do we need the Technical Discussion Board for? We can all just consult the archives. In my defense, I DID check the Board as well as the last few archives using keyword "Plasti-kote" since my question was primarily about that brand, but found nothing. Perhaps I didn't go far enough back in time. It would be nice if it was only necessary to enter the keyword once to search all the archives, even if one at a time. Anyway, thanks for your paint recommendations.

                    Use John Deere Blitz Black

The GM "eggshell black" has a sort of "glow" or sheen underneath that sets it apart from other paints. Blitz Black is a PEREFECT match.

Several of the more experienced restorers in my area use GM Restoration black on the engine compartment. Semi gloss fast drying. That's what I plan to use on my 66 roadster.

What John Deere Blitz Black number??

When I called the local John Deere dealer, he said his book had several listings for Blitz Black. Is there a particular code number I should be asking for?

Tell your parts guy ther numbers refer to different QUANTITIES of paint. Quart, Gallon, or areosol can.................I use the spray cans.

There's only one JD Blitz Black.

Dave, I'm unfamiliar with the restoration black from GM, but if it's the same as their chassis black paint it has a tar like base that'll wash off with gasoline.

I had the same experience at a John Deer dealer last year, Scott. There were several types listed under Blitz Black aerosols, with different sheens (ie, flat, semi-gloss, gloss)... I ordered semi-gloss, but haven't used it as yet.
