    Side Exhaust Covers

My original side exhaust covers have the typical front curve sand blast wear and a nick or two in evidence. Anyone have experience with a vendor who reconditions original covers? If these were to be replaced - is finding an NOS pair the only option are reproductions available and if so - undetectable from the original?

Peter - they are recently in reproduction. I bought a set at Carlisle in Aug from Paragon, they even have the original black glass insulators. I believe they are licensed by GM restorations.

Here's a set on Ebay ending today also, a few nicks.....but NOS GM

Craig - In your opinion are the repros you bought as original ? no differences?

I've heard that Ecklers has the GM Restoration license and the original tooling for the covers and sells them to other vendors, as well as to the public. If you get either a NOS set or repros, invest $50 in a pair of clear plastic covers that snap on the curved portion of the covers. I got mine from Long Island Corvette, they are worth their weight in gold.

Peter - I have an original set on my 67, that do have all the pits you mention, and this set is going on my 66 427-425. I personally can't see a difference, they seem to be exact on the outside. The black glass looks great too. I think the GM ones may have some imprinting on the actual glass, but that is facing the pipes anyway. I think the recent GM sets through the parts system have a gray glass instead of black, so they may actually be more original in that respect. As Patrick mentions, I believe Ecklers has the license from GM, so I supect that the units from Paragon are actually from Ecklers. However, at Carlisle, I got a show price of $250 off the regular price...I paid $1050 for the pair, and they were $1300 normally. I am not sure what Ecklers charges. This price is for the two covers, not the trim moldings above the covers...I bought a NOS set of those at Carlisle. Anyway, They had about 6 sets at Carlisle at Paragon, and one other guy and I were both buying a set. Between the two of us, we went through all the boxes to pick the best sets...there are a few minor dings here and there, nothing as much as on the NOS set on Ebay I listed above.....Craig
