Color and value of a Corvette

    Hello,

I'd like to know if the color of a Corvette influences the value. There are car color that were/are very popular but a few years later the taste of the people changes. Think of a C2, are there colors that are currently detract the value of the car or does the color only have minor influence to the value?

    Regards

AHHhhh. Do'nt forget about 66 only--Mossport Green. I say lower production colors are worth more now like my 65--- Goldwood Yellow and in 63, allthough not my favorite, Sadle Tan metalic or something like that. David

my last post I said RED because %90 of C1 are red, FI and 4-speed, I had a cascad green 57 for 30 years and people loved it. Now I have a copper 55 and people go crazy over the color, I wish I had a dollar for all the pic. people take of it.

I doubt that it makes a measureable difference in value, it just may take longer to find a buyer for some colors. Just like with all cars, "resale red", white, and black are probably most popular. None of the price guides ever deal with colors.

Most midyear Corvette buyers, I believe, are far more interested in condition and options and originality, so that color wouldn't normally be a deal-breaker for them, although they may try to make it a bargaining ploy: "aw, I don't know, the ash trays are dirty, the tires seemed soft when I kicked 'em, and the color ain't my favorite, etc, ...would you take $xx,xxx?". A few, I suspect, are only after a particular color and it could as easily be yours as some other color.

For what it's worth, at the most recent Corvettes at Carlisle there is no question
that the fewest for sale cars were silver and white for C2. There were not too many
greens either.Same story at the Mecum Auction there. Not sure how price correlates, but in searching for one for a while ,the silver and white seemed harder to find.

It used to be "resale red" would command the highest price when you went to sell a sporty car. Now I don't know. Go to a Corvette show. Note the number of red cars. I don't Chevy ever made that many. Maybe red cars had a high survival rate. At the Corvette show, note how pretty and appreciated the blue, the silver, and the rare color ones are. Hmmm. Colors clearly go in and out of fashion.

One thing is for sure. Original paint commands the highest price. If repainted, the original color in lacquer is second. After that is the original color in a catalyzed paint with clear coat. Much farther down is a color change. Changing the color can usually be detected unless the repainter goes to extraordinary lengths to hide that. And you can't hide that if your car is a later model with the firewall identification plate. So if your question is really "I'm going to repaint, and I'm thinking of changing the color", the answer is don't unless you really hate it, because it will probably lower the value of the car. If that's the case, you'll need to decide how much you hate the original color. It's your car. Paint it pink if you want.

It's not just RED C1's the C2's at NCRS meets are all big block convertible, or F.I. I'am beginning to think a SMALL block coup 327-350hp like mine is rare, for get color! G.M must have only made a hand full.

                  Hiya Olli,

I was hoping you'd show at Super Corvette Sunday this year. Over 700 Vettes!

I think the above post about original paint followed by original color lacquest usw is the best analysis of the effect on price (or value - not always the same thing...).

By the way, check out www.vettes.ch, click on Buchs 2002 and scroll down - some stranger liked my car enough to put on his website.

                  Bill
