67 exhaust question for NCRS Top Flight

Can anyone please tell me about 67 exhaust (undercar) and NCRS judging rules? I cannot find steel pipes and galvanized OEM mufflers. The parts houses do not sell steel pipes and mufflers - they sell aluminized exhaust. What have some of you NCRS guys done about this problem? Will aluminized parts work? Is the deduction severe? The judging manual does not reference aluminized but it does refernce stainless steel.

The point deduction is in the standard deduction section (separate book). The points assigned to the pipes and mufflers are 10 for orginality and 10 for condition (clamps and hangers separate 5/5). I believe the standard point deduction for originality for stainless is 50% or 7.5 points total. I would assume you would not get points on condition. Looking at it using steel pipes you will have maybe a year of driving or storage before you begin to loose condition points. Most likely 1-2 the first year 3 after that when they are real rusty. The stainless pipes are twice the price but look very nice! I have elected to go with stainless (Allens) and they are really beautiful. I will take the points (the condition should stay good). There are 273 points to loose before you go into second flight. That leaves you 98% of other points to nickle and dime. Spend your money wisely.

Steve, Here is my suggestion. Obtain all the correct configuration pipes with the flatened oval shape (2 1/2") and formed 2inch to 2 1/2 inch transition. Also the single tail pipe section welded to the mufflers. Clamps should be the gillotene type with 5/16 threads and flange nuts, not 3/8". Make sure the mufflers are the original style and not the over the counter copies that most are. Then if all is correct configuration and only the finish is wrong, I only deduct 2 points total, one for each side. The point deduction adds up for deviations from originals. If I remember correctly heat shields are addressed seperate.

I'm not sure you would automatically lose condition points just because the material is not of the original type-assuming the system is in 'perfect' condition.

The rules state however that you must retain 10% of your originality points to be eligible for condition points.

Unless it has changed, I know that Corvette Central used to make regular steel pipes for special orders. They make their own systems, so it is not a big deal. Your set would come with aluminized mufflers, however.

Call Mike Sampson (sp?) and ask him. He's the guy to talk to over there for items like that.

Paragon will also make pipes in plain steel, and will also weld them to the mufflers as original; special order - takes 2-3 weeks.
