    1961 Oil Quanity

    I know this may seem like such a silly question, but I have had the darnest time finding info tell me exactly how much oil to use during routine oil change including filter. My engine has the original oil pan. I assume 5 quartz but would like to know for sure. Thanks, Craig #36551

    The Owner's Manual contains such information as does the AIM.

      Dale,
      As always I appreciate a somewhat round about post, but as for the Owner's Manual I found no reference to a total amount. On page 22 it references when and how often, but unless I am totally blind I found no other reference. Thanks
      As for the AIM, I will check it now. Cheers, Craig

        I just fill my oil till it says,"FULL". I never have measured it. Be sure to fill the oil filter canister with each oil change otherwise you'll have no oil on the mains or rods for an instant or two when you start it up.

          Dale;

          I found this easy to do when I had an adapter and screw-on oil filter. However, when I went back to the original oil filter canister, I was unable to fill it without the oil leaking down my arm while tighten the canister bolt down. Whats the secret?

            What's the secret? Stick with or go back to the spin-on oil filter conversion. GM didn't go to this system in 1968 because the cannister-style system worked just as well. You can get all of the benefits for your C1 or C2 by going with the conversion. Just before you have the car judged, you can switch to the cannister (it's VERY easy, of course). Then, when the judging is over, go back to the spin-on at the first oil change.

              1125 gallons through the oil fill tube and 375 gallons in the filter canister.
              That's what the AIM says.

              I think they mean more than 1 Corvette.

                Don't fill it so full.

                    Hi! Craig
                    When I first purchased my 61 I sent to GM for an informational package and they sent me a 1961 specification booklet free. Information provided: Five quart oil pan less filter.

                    Hope this helps!

                      It's in the "Capacities" section near the back of the Owner's Manual.
